Coombe gives you the true feeling of “getting away from it all.” About the farm Historical Coombe Farm, which was acquired by the National Trust in 1980, is still very much a working farm. Tucked away above the valley of Coombe Hawne there is a long standing history of myth and legend surrounding the farm. It’s a little disputed fact that the last ever recorded ‘Run of Spirits’ in Fowey took place at Coombe on the 9th August 1845 and there is also a cavity between the kitchen and dining room reputed to have used as a smugglers hole. The surrounding area has provided inspiration for artists and authors for centuries, including Sir Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch, Kenneth Grahame and Daphne du Maurier. The historic harbour town of Fowey dates back to the 1300s and everywhere you look, you can find tell-tale signs of its vibrant past. From the Hundred Years War to D-Day preparations, Fowey has played a key part in some of Britain’s most significant events. Coombe Farm has been standing for over two hundred years and staying here really gives you a sense of being part of its rich history.
